Annie Lee’s daddy has been dead for eighty-three days, but that doesn’t stop the bathroom smelling just like his aftershave every morning or the radio sometimes switching onto his station all by itself. To make matters worse, Annie Lee's starting middle school without a friend—until she catches the eye of another outsider, a girl named Mitch. While Mama’s at work, Annie Lee sneaks out and rides her scooter to a downtown Durham mall where she meets Ray, a pianist whose music is pure magic. When Annie Lee finally brings herself to ask Ray for piano lessons, he agrees to teach her—and challenges her to realize that it’s worth letting other people into her life again. Then Ray goes missing right before Annie Lee’s first piano recital and her new friendship with Mitch is put at risk because of a misunderstanding. Is Annie Lee brave enough to admit that she cares for Mitch and Ray even if it means she might not get either of them back? Or will she close herself back up, just like her mama has, and go back to being invisible?
