The Story of Nian
Chinese, both the language and culture, is losing its place in the everyday lives of families. Although SEA has a large Chinese community, globalisation has caused a dilution of culture in young Chinese families. Parents rely on external 'help' such as books to pass down Chinese culture and traditions to their children. Schools are also making use of folk tales to teach Chinese culture, as these stories are most palatable for children. The entire series has been translated into the English language. There are various illustration styles used, all of which are contemporary yet have retained the oriental aspect of the look and feel, making the overall visuals very successful and an essential component of the stories as a whole.
