Before jazz was paired with wine and sold to the white establishment, it had been the ‘unapologetic expression’ of an oppressed people. Generations later, and energised by increasing cultural diversity in 21st-century London, artists like Shabaka Hutchings, Moses Boyd and Nubya Garcia are reclaiming jazz as vital and creative community music and playing major festival stages all over the world. Drawing from 68 original interviews with key members of this renaissance—including Gilles Peterson—music agent and festival director André Marmot traces the booming UK jazz scene, its history, and its relationship with mainstream music and society more broadly.
