One Jump at a Time
When Nathan Chen tried on a pair of his sister’s figure skates at the age of three, the odds of becoming a world champion and Olympic gold-medalist were stacked against him. One of five children born to Chinese immigrants, Chen’s family didn’t have the resources or access to break into the exclusive figure skating world. Recognizing his tremendous talent and passion, his mother, Hetty Wang, stepped up as his coach – sacrificing everything to make sure Chen had the time and exposure to make it in the ultra-competitive world. Unprecedented sacrifice and dedication paid off at the 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing, as Chen was crowned the “Quad King” and won gold, becoming the first Asian-American man to stand at the highest podium in figure skating. Now, in his own words, Chen opens up about everything it took to pursue his dreams. Bolstered by his unwavering passion for figure skating and his family’s unconditional support, Chen describes the most difficult times in his life, and how he overcame each obstacle–from sleeping in the car when he and his mom couldn’t afford a hotel on the way to competitions, to the racism he faced on the ice, to the extreme physical and mental toll of the sport. Pulling back the curtain on the professional figure skating world, Chen reveals what it was really like at the controversial Olympic 2022 games in Beijing, and how he made the difficult choice to compete on the US team in the same city his parents fled—and his grandmother still lives. A poignant and unfiltered account of his experience at the top level of figure skating as an Asian American, Chen’s story is an empowering and unfiltered testament of the extraordinary power of persistence, grit, and passion.
