In February 2022, the New Yorker ran an online-only issue which included excerpts from interviews that longtime staff writer D.T. Max conducted with Stephen Sondheim over the last 5 years of his life, in preparation for a major magazine profile to coincide with the premiere of the musical Sondheim was working on at the end of his life. The online piece generated a tremendous response with many saying it was one of – if not the best - interviews they’d ever read with Sondheim and that Max had gotten a kind of candor and even vulnerability out of Sondheim that he rarely showed in public settings. D.T. Max is going to produce a short book of these unedited conversations, which Harper plans to publish around Thanksgiving 2022 to coincide with the one-year anniversary of Sondheim’s death. The book will be small format trim and mostly be compromised of the transcripts of the several interviews Max did with Sondheim over the last 5 years where he shares his thoughts on everything under the sun: his work, his music, his favorite movies, his parents, New York City, aging, his creative powers, and more. Interspersed throughout the text, Max will set the scenes of the interviews, his impressions of Sondheim during each session, and how their unusual relationship evolved over this period. This will be a perfect little gift item for the holiday season and no doubt there will be many commemorations of Sondheim’s work and legacy at the time, and this book can be the centerpiece of that moment.
