In Search of Van Gogh
In 1990, two photographers and art enthusiasts, Danilo De Marco and Mario Dondero, set out to retrace the steps of Vincent van Gogh’s life, by foot and by train, just as the artist had journeyed throughout his lifetime. Armed with their love for and knowledge of van Gogh’s work, they documented over ten years all of the sights van Gogh would have seen in The Netherlands, England, Belgium and France. Author and art historian Gloria Fossi puts the artist’s journey into context by mining his personal letters and other historical documents. Van Gogh’s well-documented travels come alive in this gorgeous book as the landscapes, architecture, portraits, and cultural references (both through vintage and contemporary photographs) are shown side-by-side next to the artist’s renditions. In their comparisons, we see just how much time has passed and can almost feel his vision emanating from the brushstrokes on the page. In searching for the artist’s mind and soul, it is safe to say the trio found a human being who lived an extraordinary life and whose story needs to be told again and again for decades to come.
