The First, the Few, the Only
Corporate structures, as well as messages we’ve been taught by our society and even our loved ones, have kept women of color exhausted, downtrodden, and feeling like we must constantly hide or change who we are in order to “fit in,” move up the corporate ladder, and be successful in our careers. In order to change the conversation around outdated workplace norms and perceptions, we must first find our individual power by shedding toxic internal and societal messaging, while carrying the valuable cultural messages and experiences that give us a unique and necessary perspective on our work. By coming into our own power, we can build collective power with other women of color, using our strength to confront microaggressions and corporate delusions; fight for long-lasting, positive change in corporate structures that have historically upheld bias; and rework the corporate table to be genuinely inclusive to all. In dismantling systems of corporate exclusion, we will finally be able to bring our true selves to a work environment where our words are heard, our lived experiences are respected, and our contributions are recognized and valued.
