In March 2020, soon-to-graduate medical students in New York City were preparing to celebrate the feat of finishing their degrees. A week later, they were thrown into the halls of the city’s hospitals, enlisted in a desperate battle to fight the Covid-19 pandemic overwhelming New York. These young NYU and Columbia medical students—the first generation to take the Hippocratic Oath via Zoom—were soon unleashed into emergency rooms and intensive care units in the iconic Bellevue Hospital. Goldberg weaves together a compelling narrative of these students as they are challenged on the frontlines. The pandemic redefines what it means for them to be both doctors and one another’s support systems, coworkers, classmates, and friends. Goldberg spoke to these young doctors daily throughout the spring and summer of 2020, and was also provided with their video diaries and notes. The resulting narrative is an unforgettable depiction of a crisis unfolding in real time.
