Return of the God Hypothesis
Stephen C. Meyer is one of the preeminent scientists studying the origin of life, now working as Director of the Center for Science and Culture at the Discovery Institute. In his first book, Signature in the Cell, Meyer argued that digital code embedded in DNA points to a designing intelligence and helps unravel a mystery that Charles Darwin did not address: how did life begin? His follow up book, Darwin’s Doubt, built on this subject of Intelligent Design, taking its readers one step further into the history of life, specifically how Cambrian animal forms look to have arisen from intelligent cause rather than an undirected natural process. In both books, even though he came to the conclusion that life had to stem from an intelligent mind, Meyer purposely stayed away from attempting to answer questions about “who” might have designed life. Now in his newest book, Meyer provides a reasoned and evidentially-grounded answer to this question based on recent scientific discoveries in physics, cosmology, and biology. Refuting the popular arguments put forward by the “New Atheists” against the existence of God, the “God hypothesis” that Meyer puts forth rests on three scientific claims: 1. The evidence from cosmology shows that the material universe had a beginning 2. The evidence from physics shows that from the beginning, the universe had been “finely tuned” to allow for the possibility of life 3. The evidence from biology shows that since the beginning of the universe, large amounts of genetic information present in DNA must have arisen to make life possible Exploring the evidence from these three fields, Meyer will argue the evidence supports not just the existence of an intelligent designer of some kind, but the existence of a theistic creator.
