Saved
When veteran reporter Benjamin Hall woke up on the morning of March 14, 2022, he had no idea that his life was about to change, forever. A television reporter for Fox News, Hall had covered some of the most dangerous conflicts of in modern history, reporting from war zones in places like Syria, Libya, and Somalia, but that life was supposed to be behind him. With a young family at home, life on the edge had become a thing of the past, as he’d recently requested, and received, reassignment to the more stable environs of the US State Department beat. But when Russia viciously attacked Ukraine in February 2022, Hall quickly volunteered for the assignment. He knew the dangers of war as well as anyone, but he also knew how to tell its story—and Americans needed to understand the gravity of this stunning, world-altering conflict. A month later, while on assignment in Ukraine, Hall and his crew were blown up in a Russian drone strike. His longtime cameraman and another journalist with them were killed, and with Hall himself gravely injured and stuck inside the warzone, speculation was widespread that he might not make it out alive. This is the story of how he survived—a story that continues to this day. For the first time, Hall will tell his experience in full—from his ground level view of the war, to his dramatic rescue, to his arduous, and ongoing, road to recovery. Going inside the events that have permanently transformed him, Hall shares his view from the frontlines of our world’s conflicts, exploring the struggle to step away from the peril and how his years of experience kept him safe, right until they failed him.  Alongside this dramatic story of perseverance, Hall also delves into the unique relationship to war he shares with his father, who at the age of twelve escaped a Japanese camp in the Philippines, eventually reaching the American lines where he was rescued. As they would for Ben almost eighty years later, American service members saved his father—a debt Hall’s father went on to repay when he enlisted in American military to serve in Korea.  For Hall, this experience has been the most painful of his life, and yet in it he has discovered an even deeper appreciation for the American service members who sacrificed in the warzones that he’s reported in, and for how his father came to America. And yet, perhaps most impressively, Hall’s spirit remains undaunted, his outlook almost impossibly positive given the seriousness of his injuries. The end result is a powerful memoir of family and perseverance, of life and healing, and of what to do when you are tested in ways you never thought possible.
