At 40, Michelle had already lived a lot. She’d dropped out of college and run away to San Francisco. She’d outlived addiction and fleeting recovery, stints in sex work, many wild and ill-advised relationships, barely scraping by for years. She’d become a cult literary icon, cobbling together a relatively stable life as a writer and literary organizer, touring the world on press trips and writing retreats, and returning to her fierce and loving community of misfits. There was, however, one adventure she hadn’t yet attempted. One she could never decide if she really wanted, until it was almost too late.
