In April 2015, Kardea Brown made a leap of faith, left behind her job as a social worker in New Jersey and launched the New Gullah Supper Club, centering events around the food she grew up eating at her grandmother’s house on Wadmalaw Island in South Carolina. Soon, the Food Network discovered her and flew her to New York to spar with chefs on shows such as Beat Bobby Flay and tapping her to host Cupcake Championship.
