It started with a fire, but it wouldn’t be the only fire they’d set that day. The girls thought it’d be funny, ironic: a fire in a dumpster behind the school… a literal dumpster fire. It would perfectly capture the hot mess that the year has been for them both. But when the girls are caught and suspended, the prank that was meant to connect them pulls them further apart. And if they’re being honest, they would have drifted apart long before, if not for them clinging so possessively to each other. But honesty? That’s a loaded thing. And our protagonist is seldom honest. The two girls are polar opposites: hard and soft, bold and quiet, reckless and careful. Best friends, until they became more. As our sensitive, unnamed protagonist wrestles with the volatility of her relationship with the moody, anonymous “you”, we discover some truths:  Love is real, even when it’s messy.  The promise of something is better than the actual thing.  Some people aren’t meant to be together forever.  In a mixed timeline, the girls tangle over the course of 24 hours after the first fire, with interstitials defining their capricious relationship, and a blend of truths and lies dissected in light of their imminent destruction.
