Independence
India, 1947. In a rural village in Bengal lived 3 sisters. Priya: ambitious and determined to become a doctor; Deepa: a “beauty” whose marriage will hopefully bring her family status; and Jamini: quiet, devout, who sees and feels more than she admits. As the daughters of a well-respected, but not high caste doctor, theirs is a house of women, a place of safety and love and support. But violence is escalating in Calcutta as the debate over Partition rages on. When their father is killed in the crossfire their lives are drastically change. As their mother conforms to Hindu customs of widowhood, Priya determinedly pursues her goal of becoming a doctor. Deepa falls for a Muslim and breaks up with her family. And Jamini attempts to hold her family together, while falling in love with her sister's fiance. . When the partition of India is officially decided, the sisters find themselves separated from each other, each on different paths, each living in fear of what will happen to not just themselves, but each other.
