It is the last normal Tuesday morning in Lincolnwood, New Jersey and the Altman family is having breakfast. Dan, the father, is a former lawyer, turned screenwriter. Chloe, 17, has an AP Gov test, the ACTs on Saturday, and the State Tennis semifinals in the afternoon—and her backhand has the yips. Max, 14, is on his headphones, waiting for breakfast so he can get on his bike, leave the vicinity, and vape—while avoiding the two local bullies who make life in school and on the cul-de-sac a nightmare. Jen, the mother, is making breakfast. Just before 10 am, as Dan is on NJ Transit near Secaucus, a solar burst hits, knocking out all forms of electricity—no lights, no cars, no trains, no phones. No water in Lincolnwood. No more life as the Altmans know it. And they are SO NOT there for it. Over four transformative, chaotic days, the Altmans try simultaneously to maintain the fragile balance of their individual and collective psyches, while also trying to understand what the hell is going on.
