Once a bold experiment in condo living, Los Verticalés, this “city that grew up rather than out” is now known as The Heap. In exchange for digging gear, a rehabilitated bicycle, and a small living stipend, Orville and his fellow Dig Hands spend their days removing rubble, trash, and bodies from the collapse of this city. Orville, however, digs for a deeper reason than mere salvage: his brother Bernard, the beloved radio DJ of Los Verticalés, survives somewhere under the rubble, miraculously continuing to broadcast from the darkness while taking calls from his legions of devoted listeners. What follows is an imaginative and darkly hilarious story of conspiracy and revenge—interspersed with the collective story of life in Los Verticalés—that is both a depiction of the wonderful weirdness of community and the bonds that tie us together.
