Rachel Meyer is thirtysomething, smart, curious, a foodie, an ex-New Yorker turned American ex-pat in Mumbai. She knew some culture shock was inevitable when she agreed to move there with her Indian-born husband Dhruv. But Rachel’s sense of adventure is about to be sorely tested. One humid morning after Dhruv has left for work, his mother Swati arrives and announces that she’s leaving her husband of nearly forty years. Swati decides to move in with the newlyweds, refusing to change her mind, and that same week, Dhruv is called away for a month-long work trip, leaving Rachel and Swati alone together. As Rachel tries gamely to get to know this older woman who has upended her life, she begins to understand why Swati has left her sedate marriage and comfortable lifestyle. Meanwhile, Swati comes to discover that foreigness about Rachel that initially made her so bewildering might also help make her daughter-in-law the ally she’s never truly had.
